La Ciotat, France, October 2022
They say tourist swimming was invented in Nice, and the red carpet in Cannes. So what about La Ciotat? This is where Pétanque was born, a wonderfully relaxed version of boules. And as if that weren’t enough, La Ciotat was also the filming location for the legendary short film by the Lumière brothers, L'Arrivée d'un train en gare de La Ciotat (Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat). You know, the one where the train rushes toward the camera and allegedly caused the first audience in film history to flee in panic.
And yet, despite these monumental milestones in world history, La Ciotat has remained what it’s always been: a perfectly ordinary little town by the sea.
Down by the harbor, fishing boats — ones that actually look like they fish — float beside tour boats headed to the Calanques. The atmosphere is calm, and everyday life takes precedence over glamour. Even the sailboats in the marina are modest in size. Their masts rise like a forest of white lines, swaying gently in front of the sunlit facades of the old town.
In the heart of that old town, narrow alleys wind through buildings painted in warm colors. You'll find bakeries, small cafés, and a few old churches that have clearly seen better days.
Aside from that, La Ciotat offers mostly one thing: the quiet, unspectacular rhythm of daily life in a Mediterranean port town. And honestly? That’s kind of nice too.
