Fréjus, France, October 2022
Fréjus is a place where you can simply let yourself drift—between the old town, the harbor, and its rich history. Narrow alleys and pastel-colored facades shape the town’s charm. It’s a quiet place, not one that dazzles with grandeur, but rather captivates with its understated beauty.
At the heart of the town, the Saint-Léonce Cathedral rises unmistakably. It brings together two churches under one roof: Saint-Étienne, once the parish church, and Notre-Dame, the former bishop’s church. They were architecturally joined as early as the 12th century. Stepping inside, you can feel the weight of centuries past—and perhaps a welcome coolness on a hot day. In the adjacent cloister courtyard, birds chirp softly. I don’t meet a single soul.
Down by the harbor, Fréjus feels more alive. Sailboats sway gently on the water, glasses clink in the cafés, and tourists stroll along the promenade. Somewhere, someone bursts into laughter. I lean back, take in the moment—and leave Fréjus with the sense that there is still more to discover.
