Büsum: High-Rise by the Wadden Sea

The Büsum Lighthouse: A Beacon Since 1913.
Büsum, Germany, July 2022

Büsum has a little bit of everything: a harbor, vast tidal flats, and… a high-rise. Built in 1972, the tower was originally meant to be part of a larger convention center—except that never happened. Today, the 85-meter-tall building stands like a lone giant in the flat coastal landscape, shaping the shoreline’s silhouette in a rather—let’s say—unconventional way.

Down at the harbor, there’s no sign of such architectural extravagance. Here, shrimp trawlers bob in the water, fish sandwiches pass over the counter, and tourists stroll along the quays. But the real attraction lies beyond the dike: the Wadden Sea. At low tide, visitors venture out onto the seabed, barefoot in the mud, weaving between lugworms and shallow tidal creeks while seagulls screech overhead.

And then, eventually, the tide rolls back in. The mudflats disappear. The high-rise remains.
